VANRHYNSDORP & IMMEDIATE SURROUNDING AREA - Finally the moment we`ve all been waiting for. At this stage, it seems like an early flower season in our area, as what we can observe in contrast with last year. We had good rains and the veld looks good.  It’s also mentioned by an local expert that we’ve had more rain than last year, which may change the picture. Last year wasn’t such a good year. At the moment there are already flowers to be seen in town.

Flower Report Groen - Spoeg Coastal Park

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Hi guys,

Wow…what an AWESOME day! I ventured out with three German tourists on a field photographic excursion along the coast towards Groen River and was overwhelmed by the flowers in that area. Albeit the road being corrugated to hell (SAN Parks do take note), it was certainly worth the trip. There is a huge variety of flowers along the entire coastal region, i.e. Pietsnot (Grielum humifusum), Blue sporrie (Heliophila arenaria), Sporie (Heliophila carnosa), Elandsvy (Carpobrotus quadrifidus), Suring (Oxalis argillacea) and fields of Perdeblom (Didelta carnosa) just to name a few. If you are looking for flowers and a huge variety thereof, then this is the place to be.  Ensure to pack a picnic basket, lots of refreshments and ample memory cards…you are going to be there for the entire day!

Wishing you all a stunning week!

FLOWER REPORT FOR NAMAQUA NATIONAL PARK- SKILPAD SECTION: 26/07/2010.

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Hi all, The attached photos was taken today (26/07/2010)

The Skilpad asection of Namaqua National Park has had 41mm of rain during July 2010. This section already has substantial flowers, but it does seem a bit later and more patchy than last year. Also, the soil seems drier than the previous year, with none of the small streams in and around the park flowing. Flowers you can already see in abundance include the Varkiesknol (Conicosia elongata) and Orange (Namaqua) daisies (Ursinia sp). Reports indicate very good vygies along the coastal areas in the park.  Skilpad has had very little day visitors thus far. The upside is that the roads are still in good condition!

 Kind regards

Baksteenhoek - Spoeg River Flower Report

Monday, July 26th, 2010

Hi again,

The “roving photographer” as I’m called lately, went for a walk-about on Sunday (25th July) to Baksteenhoek farm en- route to Wallekraal (approx 25km east of Hondeklip Bay). As one approaches the river bending down at Koos Mosterts’ farm, there is a carpet of flowers where you can spend an entire day taking pics…it’s really an AWESOME site! (P.S. As a matter of courtesy, pop in at Koos Mostert and ask him permission to enter his farm…he really doesn’t mind). I shall be taking some German tourists along the coast towards Groen Rivier for a field photographic workshop today and will provide you with some feedback upon my return. Please ensure to book your “one day field photographic workshop” in advance, as there are only a few slots still available. (For more info, please drop me a mail) Have a stunning day!
