The wind’s in the east. . . .

Monday, May 31st, 2010

…. I am always conscious of an uncomfortable sensation now and then when the wind is blowing in the east.

(Bleak House - Charles Dickens)

Dearest,

How appropriate Charles!

After a bitterly cold week accompanied by 5 mm of rain, we woke up to a howling easterly gale this Monday morning. The veld is healthy and the green haze covering it seems less hazy and more solid each day. Some of the larger shrubs have their full cover of foliage already with small buds are appearing here and there.  30% Rain predicted for Wednesday and Thursday.

No bulletins from any  of the other field reporters but I do believe that they also had a good downpour last week.
Until next week, yours as always,

What dreadful hot weather we have! It keeps me in a continual state of inelegance

Monday, May 24th, 2010

So says the lady Jane Austen

Dearest,

And inelegant we were indeed since last Thursday!  Temp went up to high 30’s and gave us a welcome reprieve from the winter chill. Alas on Sunday the fog rolled in and we are now back to normal 18 - 20 degrees Celsius with the normal chilly south-westerly.  Since the last rains the veld is looking good with a subtle green haze covering the soil - this is what we call “opslag” which I suppose would translate to “new growth” in English but shall hereafter be referred to as opslag on this blog.  Some words just does not translate well into the British language. A very welcome bit of rain predicted for Thusday - Friday next.

Warmest regards,

Yours as always

Flowers 15 May 2010

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Hi All,
Even though we are still in the early stages of the upcoming 2010 flower season - there are plenty of little gems to be found by doing a “leopard crawl” with camera in hand!
I found these on one of my early morning walks in and around Hondeklip Bay.
Love,
Dawn Meintjes

Sarrisam Farm Flower Report

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Hi Daisy!

We have had 10mm during the past week. One cannot believe how soon after the green starts to show on the ground.
The “Pietsnot” is starting to show already. As always, we will need good follow up rains.
