It has rained early and well in Namaqualand. In the Hardeveld (Nuwerus, Bitterfontein, Kliprand, Putsekloof, Rietpoort, Molsvlei & Stofkraal) the total result of three cold fronts have been measured at 52 mm of rain. This bodes well for the coming flower season, given that it is followed up through the season by more rain.
The veld has turned from black to a lush green. Scattered patches of the small white oxalis are already in flower and in the Knersvlakte the yello wagyroderma (bababoudjies) and pink conophytum (knopies) are flowering.
In between the rains the days are georgeous and sunny, ideal weather for hikes and mountainbiking.
If you want to miss the crush of the flower season, now is the ideal time for visiting Namaqualand. Book accommodation with a fireplace and buy a bottle of nice Olifants River wine on your way up to Namaqualand.
