Situated near the mouth of the Olifants River, Ebenhaeser was originally founded as a Rhenish mission by Baron von Wurmb in 1831. The town has many historically interesting clay buildings – some rapidly deteriorating, as well as what are locally known as “riet huise”. The guesthouse is located in a lovely old clay house that has recently been renovated.

The local river walk is beautiful, with plenty of interesting birds (fish eagles are regulars here ) and fishing activities to entertain you, but be prepared to get muddy. If you’re a keen freshwater angler, the friendly locals will be keen to show you where the bigger fish bite. Boat rides are available from Ebenhaeser to Papendorp or Hotnotskop, and the Ebenhaeser Guesthouse can arrange horse or donkey cards rides.

Residents make their living from farming and fishing in the river. The perennial Olifants River also supplies water for lucerne, bean and coriander fields – some of the farmers still use the traditional plough and horse system to work their lands.

A few of the local women have started their own bakery and visitors are plied with a daily supply of freshly baked bread, lovely cakes and home baked biscuits.

Ebenhaeser is situated about 55km from Vredendal, on the banks of the Olifants River. Take the R362 or R363 from the N7 at Klawer (50kms past Clanwilliam), continue to Vredendal and thereafter keep following the river to the sea.

Overnight at Ebenhaeser Guesthouse and enjoy the tranquility of this rural farming and fishing community. There are also a number of options in nearby Doringbaai and Papendorp.
